The empowered father and the harvest of the prodigal son

Sermon by Ps. Michael Blankson

Scripture references God as a father and even Jesus taught his disciple to pray to God our father.

  • Ps 103:13
  • Luke 15:11-17

The prodigal son caused his father’s heart to be broken as he became a cast away.

God is a righteous father. Fathers provide and protect their families. Fatherhood is a call for hard work as it involves a lot.

We most often than not honor mothers more than fathers but the scripture in Exodus 20:12 puts fathers before mothers. We should with utmost joy celebrate and honor fathers.

Who is a father?

  • A Father is a giver of life – (John 1:4, prov 23:22). Biologically, fathers give life (Gen 4:1). Word creates life through the declaration of words – John 6:63b
  • A father provides directions. King David’s home was in chaos because he failed to provide directions in his family; he had rapist, murderers and rebellious children even to His throne.

Genesis 18:19 (NIV) – For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.”

  • A father is responsible for ensuring the promises of God concerning the family
  • Every father is a role model, or a mentor and his children look up to him to help shape their life
  • A father is a giver and a supplier of needs – (Phil 4:19, 1 Timothy 5:8). The litmus test for fatherhood is provision
