Speaking in tongues is an important aspect of our Christianity.

We need to understand the fundamentals of the faith we have as Christians – John 1:12

Misconceptions about speaking in tongues

– must every Christian speak in to (1 Cor 12:30)

– It is a gift for selected people (1 Cor 12:10)

– Why do you speak something you don’t understand? (1 Cor 14:14)

Once I believe in Jesus I receive

  1. The life of Christ (John 3:16, John 11:25)
  2. The holy spirit (Acts 2:37, John 20:21-22)

Once the holy spirit comes into you, he gives you a new spirit (John 3:3-6). I am a spirit and I have a body and soul. Our Spirit bears witness that we are Children of God (Romans 8:16)

Some people think when you are born of water is water baptism, but it means to be born by the word of God. (1 Peter 1 :21-23, 1 Peter 1:22-23)

The holy spirit helps us bear the fruits when we receive Life – Galatians 2:23

Apart from seeking for the fruits, you must also wait on for the promise of the holy spirit by waiting (Acts 1:5Acts 2:1-4)

After the spirit has come upon you is that you will speak in new tongues (Mark 16:17). When Jesus said this, he didn’t tell them how but the sign of speaking in new tongues is the manifestation of the presence of the spirit (Acts 10:45-46)

After believing as a Christian, you need the holy spirit in your life (Acts 19:1-5)

Even Aps. Paul (Saul) received the holy spirit after his encounter on his way to Damascus (Acts 9:17)

What is tongue?

It means language and there are 2 types (1 Cor 13:11)

–  Tongues of angles

– Tongues of men

Demystify the misconceptions about speaking in tongues

There are 3 operations of tongues

  1. Glossolalia (Greek word) is an unknown but personal tongue – (Mark 16:17). It is supernaturally inspired and not learnt. The one who speaks and those who hear do not understand only God (1 Corinthians 14:2). It’s for your own edification (2 Corinthians 14:4)
  2. Xenolalia: these are diver kinds of tongues of other languages (Acts 2:4). It’s speaking a known language without learning it. Those around you can understand but you might not. It’s an unknown tongue to you but a known tongue to you. It doesn’t require interpretation. (1 Cor 14:22)
  3. Xenoglossia – It’s a prophetic tongue. It is not an existing language but can be interpreted and needs an interpreter for understanding. You are not translating but rather interpretating it for the church. It’s to edify the church (1 Corinthians 14:12-13, 14:26

Benefits of speaking in tongues

  1. Spiritual edification (1 Cor 14:4)
  2. Direct communication with God
  3. Praying in personal tongues is speaking to God (1 Cor 14:2, Ephesians 6:18)
  4. Speaks mysteries
  5. Praying in line with Gods perfect will (Romans 8:26)
  6. It stimulates faith (Jude 1:20)
  7. You are giving thanks better (1 Cor 14:14-16)

Signs of the snare in your life

The mere fact that you are born again doesn’t insulate you from the devil’s scheme. The bible says in James 5:13 that if anyone is suffering, you should pray. Sometimes things done seem the way they see outside. That is why Paul said to the Ephesians do not give a foothold to the devil (Ephesians
